The story

The woodcock had been invited to the opening of a retrospective on avian minimalism, but arrived three hours early and decided to wait. It spent the time arranging its plumage according to a forgotten Vogue issue from 1973, believing the teacup to be a ceremonial hat stand. When the curator finally arrived, they mistook the bird for a performance piece and left a grant application on the floor beside it. The woodcock did not move. It never does when it thinks it’s being observed.

The brief

A lone woodcock stands motionless on a cracked linoleum floor beneath a single flickering fluorescent tube, its feathers meticulously groomed in asymmetrical patterns of teal and burnt sienna, one wing slightly raised as if caught mid-gesture, the room otherwise empty save for a overturned teacup and a spool of black thread coiled near its left talon.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
