The story

The gibbon had been told, quite firmly, that style was not optional in the East Wing after the incident with the lava lamp and the interpretive dance. So it dressed accordingly, though it never quite grasped why the waistcoat buttoned at the knees or why the monocle fogged when it sighed. It read the financial section upside down because the right side up made the numbers look like sad faces, and it preferred not to dwell on sadness. The tea had gone cold twenty minutes ago, but setting it down would imply defeat, and defeat, as the butler had once whispered while adjusting its cufflinks, was simply unfashionable.

The brief

A gibbon sits upright on a velvet chaise in a dimly lit drawing room, wearing a slightly crooked monocle and a tweed waistcoat too large for its frame, one paw resting delicately on a teacup, the other holding a folded newspaper upside down, under the glow of a single brass lamp casting long shadows across the floral wallpaper.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
