The story

The mite had been promoted to Junior Clerk in the Department of Subtle Oversight after three years of flawless filament-counting on Form 7B. It did not know it was a mite, nor that its suit was stitched from lint and hope. Each morning, it adjusted its tie — a thread of blue nylon — and filed reports on the migration patterns of dust motes. No one noticed it. No one was meant to. The mite believed it was essential. The office, meanwhile, believed the mite was a speck of dirt that had somehow learned to stand still. They both were wrong. Neither corrected the other.

The brief

A tiny, indistinct mite wearing a miniature three-piece suit stands upright on a dusty windowsill in a dim, beige government office, illuminated by the flat, grey light of a single overhead bulb, its segmented body barely distinguishable from the chipped paint and paper clips scattered nearby.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
