The story

The starfish had been offering advice for seventeen years, though none of it was ever useful. It told the librarian to reorganize her socks by lunar phase, warned the baker that bread rises better when apologized to, and once insisted that silence was merely the sound of regret wearing wool socks. No one listened anymore. But today, as the light shifted and the dust settled, the starfish finally said something true: 'I do not know why I am here.' It did not wait for an answer.

The brief

A single starfish rests motionless on a weathered wooden table in a dimly lit attic, one arm slightly curled as if mid-thought, surrounded by dust motes catching the pale afternoon light filtering through a cracked skylight, its surface mottled beige and faintly iridescent.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
