The story

The bee had been asked, three times that morning, for directions to the nearest clover patch. It replied each time with a fact about the migratory patterns of European starlings, the tensile strength of spider silk, and the etymology of the word ‘honeymoon.’ The human, now holding the teacup with both hands, sighed and whispered, ‘I just wanted to know where the flowers are.’ The bee blinked. It did not answer. It knew the answer was irrelevant. The flowers were everywhere. And nowhere. And it had already told them.

The brief

A single honeybee hovers motionless above a cracked teacup on a sunlit windowsill, its wings slightly blurred as if mid-thought, while dust motes drift in slanted afternoon light that catches the gold of its stripes and the faint smear of honey on the saucer.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
