The Under New Management Swallow

The story
The swallow had been hired three days ago to oversee morale, though no one had told it what that meant. It arrived at dawn, perched on the sign, and waited. Employees glanced up, shrugged, and went back to their spreadsheets. By noon, the sign had been moved twice—once by interns, once by the janitor who thought it was decoration. The swallow never blinked. It did not eat. It did not sing. It simply remained, a small, feathered emblem of change no one had asked for, but everyone now pretended to understand.
The brief
A single swallow perches on a tarnished brass sign that reads 'Under New Management' in chipped gold leaf, its head tilted slightly as if listening, the background a dim office hallway with flickering fluorescent light casting long shadows across beige walls and a half-empty coffee mug on a nearby desk.
The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
