The Under New Management Greenshank
Random inspiration: under new management greenshank

The story
The greenshank had applied for the position three weeks prior, unaware the role was symbolic. It arrived punctually at 8:15 a.m., placed its résumé on the desk, and waited. No one came. The sign went up that afternoon. Now it stands where the receptionist used to be, one leg lifted not from fatigue, but because it believes stillness is the new protocol. The coffee mug is cold. The light buzzes. It does not move. It is waiting for instructions that will never come.
The brief
A greenshank stands rigidly on a linoleum floor beside a flickering fluorescent light, one leg slightly raised as if mid-step, its feathers dull grey under the hum of a vacant office at dusk, with a half-empty coffee mug and a 'Under New Management' sign crooked on the wall behind it.
The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
