The Under New Management Flowerpecker

The story
The flowerpecker had been hired Tuesday. Not for its singing, which was mediocre, nor for its pest control, which it neglected in favor of staring at reflections. The previous tenant, a molted moth, had left abruptly after a dispute over seed rationing. Now the bird adjusted its posture every thirteen minutes, as instructed, waiting for the next memo. It had not yet figured out whether the management referred to the house, the season, or itself. The teacup cooled. No one came to clarify.
The brief
A small grey bird with a slightly ruffled crest stands stiffly on a wooden windowsill, one claw resting on a brass plaque that reads 'UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT' in peeling gold leaf, morning light slanting across faded floral wallpaper and a half-empty teacup.
The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
