The story

The whistler had once been renowned for its melodies, but after the landlord raised the rent and the birdseed shop closed, it took to whistling only for spare change outside the laundromat. Now, it sits on the mug, waiting for the human to leave so it can steal the last crumb of toast. The human, unaware, hums along off-key. The bird does not correct them. It has learned that silence is cheaper than song.

The brief

A small, tired-looking whistler bird perches on a chipped ceramic mug in a dimly lit kitchen, its feathers slightly ruffled, one wing drooping as if from exhaustion, under the pale glow of a single overhead bulb casting long shadows across faded linoleum and a half-empty teacup.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
