The story
The turaco had been waiting for someone to notice the discount. It had read the tag three times and felt the price was insulting, yet it remained seated because the chair was comfortable and the batteries were out of reach. A woman pushed a cart past without looking up. The bird shifted its weight and wondered if it should have accepted the seven-dollar offer from Tuesday. It stayed still until the store closed and the lights dimmed.
The brief
A turaco sits on a plastic folding chair in a discount department store aisle. Fluorescent light reflects off its blue-green feathers and a red price tag reading $9.99 hangs from its leg. A single shelf of generic batteries stands behind it.
The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
