The story

The woodcock had not moved in three days. It did not blink when the notification chimed, nor when the teacup cooled to room temperature. Outside, dawn crept over the rooftops, but the woodcock saw only the next line, the next reply, the next reason to stay. It had once flown south for winter. Now, it migrated only vertically — from bed to chair, from chair to screen. The apartment smelled of old paper and ozone. No one came to check. The woodcock did not mind. It was, after all, exactly where it needed to be.

The brief

A woodcock stands motionless on a dusty windowsill, one leg tucked beneath it, eyes fixed on a flickering laptop screen displaying endless scrolling text, the room lit by the cold blue glow of the monitor against faded beige walls and a half-empty teacup.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
