The story
The oxpecker had been promoted yesterday. No one told it what the job entailed, only that it was now ‘synergy-aligned’ and expected to ‘leverage its natural symbiosis’ in Q3. It sat motionless, waiting for a tick to appear on the edge of the quarterly forecast. None came. The fluorescent light hummed. It did not blink.
The brief
A lone oxpecker in a miniature navy-blue suit stands rigidly on a polished mahogany desk, one claw resting on a stack of blank reports, under the harsh glow of a single overhead fluorescent light that casts no shadows and drains all warmth from the beige walls.
The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
