The story

The goldeneye had been told, by a memo slipped under the door three days prior, that optimism was a structural requirement. It had read the memo twice, then stood. It did not know what it was optimizing for, nor why the room had no doors or windows, but it held the pose because the memo said to. Outside, if there was an outside, nothing moved. Inside, the duck waited, structurally sound, for the next instruction, which never came.

The brief

A goldeneye duck stands upright on a polished concrete floor in a featureless white room, one wing slightly raised as if mid-adjustment, its feathers catching flat, even light that casts no shadows, the walls and ceiling seamless and unadorned, the bird’s expression calm and unchanging.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
