The story

The shark had been there for three Tuesdays. No one mentioned it. Janet from accounting swept papers around its tail without looking up. The intern tried to feed it a stapler once; it didn’t react. The shark didn’t eat, didn’t grow, didn’t seem to notice the world below — though occasionally, when the printer jammed, it would tilt its head slightly, as if listening. By Friday, it had vanished. The coffee cup was still cold.

The brief

A slightly translucent shark floats motionless near the ceiling of a small, windowless office, its faint blue-gray form catching the dim fluorescent light, casting no shadow as it hovers above a desk cluttered with unopened mail and a half-drunk cup of cold coffee.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
