The story

The sunfish had been there for three days, according to the logbook taped to the door, though no one remembered signing in. It did not swim, nor did it sink. It simply existed, half-dissolved, as if the room had decided to turn it into a souvenir of itself. The janitor came each morning, wiped the rim of the pool with a rag, and left without comment. Once, he swore the fish blinked. He never mentioned it again.

The brief

A single sunfish floats motionless in a shallow pool of viscous amber liquid, its translucent fins drifting like wet parchment, suspended in a dim, windowless room where the walls are painted the same dull ochre as the fluid, and a single bare bulb casts a flat, yellowish glow from the ceiling.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
