The story

The sloth had been this way for three days, ever since it drank from the wrong puddle near the mossy stone. It didn’t panic. It just hung there, slowly oozing toward the ground, watching ants climb its forearm like tiny explorers on a sinking island. A toucan landed nearby, tilted its head, then flew off without comment. The sloth blinked. Time, it seemed, had forgotten to hurry.

The brief

A slow-moving sloth with a gelatinous, semi-liquid body hangs upside down from a low tree branch in a humid jungle clearing at dusk, its form slightly distorted by gravity and translucent greenish skin, surrounded by blurred foliage and dim amber light filtering through the canopy.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
