The story

The emu had been waiting for the rain to stop. It didn’t know it had already melted. For three days, it stood where it had stopped walking, feathers dripping slowly onto the floor, each drop leaving a faint, salt-crusted stain. The typewriter beside it had typed one sentence before jamming: 'I am not a bird anymore.' No one came to check. The attic forgot it was there. The emu didn’t mind. It was easier this way — less effort to stand, less need to blink. The light flickered once. It didn’t react.

The brief

A semi-liquid emu stands motionless in a dimly lit attic, its body slowly pooling into the wooden floorboards like warm wax, feathers still intact but sagging at the edges, under a single bare bulb casting a sickly yellow glow over stacked cardboard boxes and a forgotten typewriter.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
