The story

The myna had been told, in a memo slipped under its cage three Tuesdays ago, that its seasonal adjustment was now complete. It did not move. It did not sing. It merely waited, as instructed, for the next memo to arrive. The room, too, had been adjusted — the radiator turned down, the curtains drawn just so — and the bird, now perfectly calibrated to the hour, felt nothing at all.

The brief

A single myna bird stands motionless on a wooden windowsill in a sparse room, its feathers slightly ruffled by a draft from an open casement, the late afternoon light casting long, cool shadows across faded blue walls and a dust-covered floor.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
