The Seasonally Adjusted Catfish
Random inspiration: seasonally adjusted catfish

The story
The catfish had been seasonally adjusted last Tuesday, though no one remembered agreeing to it. It now resided in the break room of the Regional Economic Indicators Bureau, where it was periodically checked for inflationary drift. No one fed it. No one spoke to it. It simply waited, its adjustments complete, its purpose unclear, its silence the only metric that never changed.
The brief
A single catfish lies motionless on a white linoleum floor beneath a flickering fluorescent tube, its scales dulled by a thin film of dust, one gill slightly flared as if caught mid-breath, the room otherwise empty except for a half-empty coffee mug on a metal shelf three feet away.
The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
