The story

Arthur adjusted his waistcoat every Tuesday. It was the only way to remain seasonally adjusted. He waited for the rain to stop, though it had not rained in three months. The clock on the wall ticked backward. Arthur did not mind. He simply sat in the beige chair and stared at the yellow wall until the light changed. Then he adjusted the waistcoat again. It was a rigorous schedule. He felt perfectly calibrated to the month of November, even though it was June. The bird felt nothing at all.

The brief

A puffin sits upright in a beige armchair, wearing a grey wool waistcoat. Grey light filters through a window with peeling white paint. The walls are pale yellow. The bird stares at the wall with a neutral expression.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
