The story

The cougar had agreed to the upgrade only because the shelter promised better naps and unlimited kibble. Now, every time it blinked, a faint whir came from its spine, and the monitor across the room updated its emotional state in real time — currently: 'Mildly Annoyed, Opting Out'. It had tried to ignore the notification, but the system refused to let it sleep until it acknowledged the prompt. So it sat. One paw raised. Waiting. The fern did not judge. The granola bar had gone stale. The loading bar had not moved in three hours. Somewhere, a server farm hummed a lullaby in B-flat.

The brief

A cougar stands motionless on a linoleum floor beneath a flickering fluorescent light, its fur subtly pixelated at the edges as if rendered in low-resolution JPEG, one paw raised halfway toward a blinking desktop monitor displaying a loading bar labeled 'Soul Sync: 37%', the room otherwise empty save for a single potted fern and a half-eaten granola bar on a metal shelf.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
