The story

It didn’t ask to be digitized. One Tuesday, after scavenging a crumb near the modem, it woke up with its left antenna rendering in 8-bit and its shadow casting a jagged, aliased edge on the wall. The landlord noticed nothing. The cat stared, then yawned. The cockroach tried to scuttle away, but its legs occasionally stuttered into placeholders—missing textures, default pink. It now waits, motionless, for the router to reboot, hoping the glitch will pass. It has not moved in three days. The sock remains where it fell.

The brief

A lone cockroach stands motionless on a cracked linoleum floor beneath a flickering fluorescent tube, its exoskeleton half-translucent and flickering with faint pixelated glitches, as if caught mid-transformation between biology and low-resolution digital artifact, surrounded by peeling wallpaper and a single abandoned sock.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
