The story

The camel had been a dromedary until last Tuesday, when the Archives of Zoological Nomenclature issued Retcon 7-B, reclassifying its second hump as a clerical error. It did not protest. It simply stood, as it had been taught, waiting for the next memo. The lamp flickered. A secretary outside cleared her throat. The camel did not move. It had learned, over many revisions, that stillness was the safest form of compliance. Somewhere, a stamp was being inked.

The brief

A lone camel stands rigidly in the center of a dim, beige-walled study, its hump subtly altered to resemble a filing cabinet, one eye blinking slowly under the pale glow of a desk lamp, surrounded by stacks of unopened envelopes labeled 'Canon'.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
