The story

The blue jay had been found on the windowsill that morning, already laminated — no one knew how or why, only that it had happened overnight, and the laminate had sealed its eyes open, its beak slightly ajar, as if caught mid-sentence. No one touched it. No one spoke. They just left the mug there, the tea going cold, and waited to see if it would blink. It never did. The laminate never peeled. The tea never got drunk. Days passed. The bird remained. The kitchen remained. The silence, thick and unremarkable, became the only thing that felt real.

The brief

A blue jay, its feathers glossy and unnaturally stiff from recent lamination, perches motionless on the edge of a Formica kitchen counter beside a half-empty mug of cold tea, under the flat, fluorescent glow of a ceiling light that casts no shadows, the walls a uniform beige and the air utterly still.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
