The Radiantly Average Mayfly

The story
The mayfly had been told, in a memo it could not read, that today was the day it would be radiantly average. It believed this. It hovered. The room offered no feedback, no peers, no predators, no nectar. It did not tire. It did not wonder why the light never changed. It did not know its lifespan was measured in hours, not epiphanies. It simply was: average, radiant, and utterly unbothered by the silence that surrounded it, which, in its own way, was also average.
The brief
A single mayfly hovers motionless in the centre of a blank white room, its wings catching a flat, even light that reveals no shadows, its body unremarkable in hue and form, suspended as if awaiting instructions that never come.
The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
