The story

The worm had spent the morning avoiding both admiration and contempt, having long ago concluded that excellence was a burden and invisibility a trap. It chose the middle path: not slow enough to be pitied, not fast enough to be noticed. A child paused, squinted, then walked on. A pigeon pecked nearby, found nothing of interest, and flew away. The worm did not move. It did not need to. It was, quite simply, exactly as it should be: radiantly average. The rain stopped. The light stayed flat. The world, for once, made no demands.

The brief

A single earthworm lies coiled in a shallow puddle of rainwater on a concrete sidewalk under a flat, overcast sky, its segmented body glistening faintly with a dull, uniform sheen of muddy beige, neither bright nor dull, neither large nor small, utterly unremarkable in every measurable way.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
