The story

The bee had been told it was radiantly average, and so it believed it. It did not strive to be extraordinary, nor did it resent its mediocrity. It hovered where it was told to hover, in the room that had been painted to match its hue, under the light that had been calibrated to its reflectance. No one watched. No one cared. The bee did not mind. It had achieved the only goal it had ever been given: to be exactly as described. It remained there, wings vibrating at the precise frequency of insignificance, waiting for nothing, needing nothing, being nothing more — and nothing less — than what the label said. The room breathed with it. It breathed with the room. Neither noticed the other.

The brief

A single bee hovers motionless in the center of a featureless beige room, its wings slightly blurred as if caught mid-flap, under flat, even lighting that casts no shadows, the walls and floor a uniform dull yellow, the bee itself unremarkable in size, color, and posture, neither glowing nor dull, simply present.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
