The story

Dr. Elara Voss had spent seventeen years trying to kill it. Now, it simply hovered, neither alive nor dead, neither threatening nor benign, just… there. She brought it coffee every morning. It never drank. The janitor stopped asking why the lights were always on. The prion did not grow. It did not shrink. It simply existed, quietly enormous, as if the universe had forgotten to assign it a purpose — and so, it waited, patient and fibrous, for someone to notice it was no longer a threat. Just a presence. Like a very large, very quiet mistake.

The brief

A single, colossal prion floats motionless in the center of a dim, beige-walled laboratory, its fibrous tendrils curling gently like overcooked spaghetti under the pale glow of a flickering fluorescent tube, casting long, soft shadows across a cluttered desk piled with unlabeled petri dishes and a half-empty mug.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
