The Provisionally Heroic Cockroach
Random inspiration: provisionally heroic cockroach
AI-generated painting and story
The story
The cockroach paused. The crumb was inches away, but the human was asleep in the next room, breathing loudly through an open door. He felt a sudden, provisional urge to be heroic. He lifted one foreleg and saluted the darkness, then remembered he was six millimetres long and had no plan. He waited for courage to arrive. It did not. Eventually he turned around and walked back under the toaster, where the light could not reach him and nothing was expected.
The brief
A brown cockroach stands upright on a kitchen countertop beneath a dim fluorescent light, one antenna raised. The walls are beige and the counter is streaked with dried coffee rings and crumbs.
The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
