The story

The trout had stopped believing in irony years ago, which made it the perfect subject for a painting no one could interpret. It waited for the tea to cool, as it always did, while the newspaper remained blank because nothing had happened worth reporting. The room had no door, but the trout never tried to leave. It simply hung, observing the steam rise in straight lines from the mugs, waiting for the next thing that would mean nothing, and feeling, for the first time in a long while, that this was enough.

The brief

A single trout hangs suspended in midair above a worn wooden table, its scales catching the flat, grey light of a windowless room, eyes half-lidded and expression neutral, surrounded by three identical mugs of cold tea and a folded newspaper with no headlines.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
