The story

The starling had decided, after years of mimicry and muttered sarcasm, to stop performing irony altogether. It had tried being sincere once before, but the neighbors complained it sounded like a malfunctioning toaster. Now it simply waited, one claw tucked beneath it, for the teacup to remember how to hold tea. The light moved. The dust did not. The bird blinked. Nothing else did.

The brief

A lone starling stands perfectly still on a wooden windowsill in a dimly lit attic, its feathers catching a slant of late afternoon light that glows amber against dust motes, while a single cracked teacup sits overturned nearby, its handle pointing uselessly toward the ceiling.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
