The story

The scaup had stopped being ironic three years ago, though no one noticed until it began refusing to migrate. It now spends its days observing the way light pools on the floor near the sink, waiting for the tea to cool just enough to drink. The calendar is wrong, but it doesn’t correct it. It has learned that correctness is the last refuge of the earnest, and it is too tired for that. Instead, it blinks slowly, once, and waits for the hum of the fridge to stop.

The brief

A single scaup stands motionless on a linoleum floor beneath a flickering fluorescent light, its feathers slightly ruffled as if caught mid-sigh, the room empty except for a half-drunk cup of tea on a metal shelf and a calendar stuck on April 17th, 2003.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
