The story

The snipe had earned three doctorates before most of its flock learned to fly in a straight line. Now, it sat in the attic of its great-aunt’s abandoned estate, auditing the estate’s 1923 ledger for discrepancies in worm-derived income. It had been offered tenure at the Institute for Ornithological Fiscal Policy, but declined — the commute was too far, and the coffee was terrible. Outside, rain tapped the roof. Inside, the snipe sighed, adjusted its spectacles, and noted a missing decimal point. It would correct it by dawn. Then it would nap. Then it would do it all again.

The brief

A lone snipe stands upright on a small wooden stool in a cluttered attic, wearing a slightly crooked mortarboard and holding a magnifying glass to examine a dusty tax form under the dim, amber glow of a single hanging bulb, surrounded by stacked ledgers, quills, and a framed diploma that reads 'Ph.D. in Avian Economics'.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
