The story

Sir Reginald Thistlewaite, third of his line, had insisted on attending the vicar’s garden party in full evening dress despite the heat and the fact that he was, biologically, a meerkat. The others pretended not to notice the waistcoat straining over his ribs or the way his monocle kept slipping when he stood on hind legs to shake hands. He sipped tea with impeccable posture, convinced that dignity, not species, dictated propriety. When a child pointed and laughed, he merely adjusted his cufflinks and remarked, 'Really, the lack of tailoring in modern youth is alarming.' Then he quietly stole a scone.

The brief

A meerkat stands upright on a wooden stool in a dimly lit study, wearing a velvet waistcoat, pocket watch chain, and tiny monocle, one paw resting on a leather-bound book as afternoon light slants through dusty blinds, casting long shadows over faded wallpaper and a half-empty teacup.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
