The story

Reginald Finch, third baronet of Avian Etiquette, had insisted on dressing for tea despite being alone and, frankly, a bird. The monocle was a gift from his late aunt, who believed vision improved with aristocratic framing. He had not moved in seventeen minutes, waiting for the butler to announce the Earl of Sparrow, who, as Reginald well knew, had been deceased since 1893. The light did not change. The forget-me-not drooped further. Reginald adjusted his cufflink—a tiny sapphire set in oxidized silver—and wondered, not for the first time, whether the waistcoat made him look puffy. He did not sigh. Birds of his station do not sigh. They wait. And adjust their monocles.

The brief

A goldfinch in a miniature velvet waistcoat and monocle perches stiffly on a gilded thimble atop a lace doily, under the flat, even light of a north-facing window in a cluttered Victorian study, surrounded by stacks of unopened mail and a single wilted forget-me-not.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
