The story

The koala had not left the house in seventeen years, not since the eucalyptus grove outside its window was replaced by a parking lot. It kept the photo tucked inside a biscuit tin labeled 'Memories (Do Not Eat)'. Each evening, it adjusted the tin’s position by exactly two degrees to the left, convinced the tree in the picture had blinked once, in 2003, and was waiting for it to notice. It never did.

The brief

A koala sits upright on a worn wooden stool in a dimly lit bedroom, gazing at a small, dusty photograph of a eucalyptus tree from 1998, its paws resting loosely on its knees, the room filled with half-packed boxes and the faint glow of a dying nightlight casting amber shadows on floral wallpaper.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
