The story

The myna on the sill had been told it was the first of its kind, but each morning it saw the same bird outside, identical in posture and gaze, and each evening, the same bird returned from the horizon. It never spoke of this. It simply adjusted its stance, waited for the light to shift, and wondered whether the others were waiting too—or if they, too, believed they were alone.

The brief

A single myna bird stands on a wooden windowsill in a sparsely furnished room, one foot slightly lifted as if mid-step, its feathers catching the pale afternoon light filtering through a half-drawn curtain; the walls are beige, the floor bare wood, and outside the window, an endless row of identical mynas stretches into a hazy distance, each mirroring the first.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
