The story

The hornet had been told it was moderately infinite, which it accepted without surprise. It hovered, waiting for the other versions of itself to appear—perhaps behind the walls, or just beyond the edge of perception. None came. It did not mind. The room was quiet, the light even, and its wings, though tired, kept the same slow rhythm. It had flown this way forever, or at least long enough to forget the difference. Outside, if there was an outside, nothing stirred. The hornet did not wonder why. It simply continued, as instructed, in the manner of things that are neither fully finite nor fully infinite, but somehow, adequately so.

The brief

A single hornet hovers motionless in the center of a blank white room, its wings slightly blurred as if caught mid-flap, casting no shadow, while the air around it shimmers faintly with the suggestion of endless repetition, though only one insect is visibly present.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
