The story

The gannet had been told, years ago, that it was mildly haunted. It did not argue. It simply stood where it was told to stand, waiting for the haunting to intensify—or perhaps, to finally notice it. The light buzzed. The stains on the wall grew no darker. No one came to see it. No one left. The gannet blinked once, slowly, as if to say: I am still here. And so, apparently, is whatever is haunting me. It just hasn’t decided to make a fuss.

The brief

A lone gannet stands motionless on a cracked linoleum floor beneath a flickering fluorescent light, its feathers slightly ruffled as if stirred by a draft that does not exist, the pale walls around it stained with faint, watery smudges that resemble old tears.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
