The story

The brant had been haunting the apartment for three weeks, not with moans or cold spots, but by persistently standing in the kitchen doorway at 3:17 a.m., staring at the toaster. The tenant, a retired actuary named Elaine, had long since stopped being frightened and instead began leaving out bits of stale bread. Tonight, the brant tilted its head, took a single step forward, and pecked at the edge of the tuna sandwich. Elaine, watching from the bedroom doorway, sighed and muttered, 'You’re welcome.' The brant blinked once, then resumed its vigil.

The brief

A lone brant stands stiffly on a linoleum floor in a dimly lit 1970s-style kitchen, one wing slightly raised as if mid-shrug, beneath a flickering fluorescent light that casts a sickly green glow over avocado-green cabinets and a half-eaten tuna sandwich on the counter.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
