The Mildly Disappointed Ray
Random inspiration: mildly disappointed ray
AI-generated painting and story
The story
The ray had come in for a routine cleaning, having heard the dentist offered a special plankton polish. It waited thirty-seven minutes, reading a back issue of *Marine Life Quarterly* upside down, while the receptionist hummed off-key and the fish in the aquarium judged it silently. When the hygienist finally appeared, she smiled, said, 'We’re out of the special polish today,' and offered a regular rinse instead. The ray sighed internally, floated up, and left without saying thank you. It would have, but it had no mouth to speak with — only disappointment, and a lingering taste of mint.
The brief
A single manta ray floats just above a linoleum floor in a dimly lit dental waiting room, its wings slightly drooping, one eye fixed on a flickering fluorescent tube overhead, the walls painted in faded beige and the air smelling of antiseptic and old magazines.
The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
