The story
The nighthawk had been waiting for three hours and forty-seven minutes, as indicated by the digital clock behind the reception desk that had stopped blinking at 3:47. It did not mind. It had filed Form 7B-Δ in triplicate, paid the aviary processing fee in mealworms, and was now merely confirming whether its nocturnal flight path clearance had been logged in the Suburban Airspace Registry. The clerk, a woman in a grey cardigan, had stepped away for a moment to refill the stapler. The nighthawk blinked once, slowly, and waited.
The brief
A lone nighthawk with slightly asymmetrical wings perches on a beige filing cabinet in a dimly lit government office, one claw resting on a stamped form marked 'APPROVED (PROVISIONAL)', under the harsh glow of a single fluorescent tube casting a pale greenish light on the linoleum floor.
The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
