The Legally Distinct Mayfly
Random inspiration: legally distinct mayfly
AI-generated painting and story
The story
The mayfly had been granted legal personhood after a clerical error in the Department of Entomological Anomalies, and now, every dawn, it returned to the same desk to await its summons. It did not eat, did not sleep, and had not moved in seventeen days. The clerk who filed the paperwork had retired. The lamp, set to turn on at 6:03 a.m., had never been adjusted. The mayfly waited. It was very good at waiting.
The brief
A single legally distinct mayfly hovers motionless above a polished mahogany desk, its wings translucent and slightly frayed at the edges, casting a faint blue-green shadow under the cold glow of a single desk lamp in an otherwise empty, beige-walled study.
The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
