The story

The yellowhammer was known for being intermittently reliable. On Tuesdays, it could predict the rain. On Thursdays, it forgot how to fly. Today, it simply sat on the sill and waited for a signal that never came. The owner had left a note saying the bird was responsible for the mail, but the bird did not understand envelopes. It blinked slowly as a cloud passed over the sun, shifting the light across its wing. It remained there, perfectly still, until it decided to be unreliable again and fell asleep standing up.

The brief

A yellowhammer sits on a grey windowsill in a beige room, half in shadow and half in afternoon light. Its feathers are a dull yellow, and it looks at a closed window with a neutral expression. A small, unplugged lamp sits beside it.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
