The story

The waxwing had been reliable for exactly three Tuesdays in a row, which was unusual enough to warrant a note pinned to the wall: 'Do not disturb. Subject in phase.' On the fourth Tuesday, it did not move at dawn, nor at noon, nor when the cat brushed the sill. The owner checked the feed, the light, the humidity — all within norm. By Wednesday evening, the bird blinked once, slowly, then preened its left wing with deliberate, almost ceremonial care. It did not sing. It did not need to. The note was updated: 'Reliability restored. Phase: intermittent.'

The brief

A single waxwing perches on the edge of a wooden windowsill in a dim attic, one wing slightly askew as if caught mid-moult, feathers dull grey with faint yellow tips, the room filled with stacked cardboard boxes and a single bare bulb casting a flat, uneven glow.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
