The story

The mouse had promised to fix the leaky faucet by noon. It arrived at 11:58, stared at the dripping tap for seventeen minutes, then decided the teacup looked more inviting. It sipped once, frowned at the lukewarm tea, and placed the cup back exactly where it found it. The faucet continued to drip. The mouse blinked, twitched its whiskers, and went to nap in the sock drawer, leaving the cup half-full and the kitchen unchanged, as if nothing had been attempted at all.

The brief

A small grey mouse stands on its hind legs beside a chipped ceramic teacup on a wooden kitchen table, one paw resting on the cup’s rim as if considering a sip, morning light slanting through a dusty window to cast long, soft shadows across faded yellow walls and a half-empty bowl of oatmeal.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
