The story

The hartebeest had been coming to this classroom every Tuesday for three years, convinced the chalkboard would one day solve its existential doubt about whether it was truly a hartebeest or merely a very committed metaphor. It never spoke. The janitor, who had long since stopped asking why, left a cup of lukewarm tea on the windowsill each morning. Today, the hartebeest blinked — just once — and the light flickered. It did not move. It never did.

The brief

A single hartebeest stands motionless in a dimly lit, empty classroom, its head tilted slightly as if listening to a silent lecture, the faded chalkboard behind it bearing only the ghost of an equation, the fluorescent light above flickering once every seventeen seconds.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
