The story

Gregory arrived at 9:00 AM to find the coelacanth floating above his inbox. It had been there since Tuesday, occasionally blinking and drifting six inches to the left before returning to its original position. According to the manual, the fish was supposed to organize the paperwork by 3:00 PM. It did not. Instead, it stared at the ceiling tiles and occasionally expelled a small bubble that drifted toward the water cooler. Gregory sighed, placed a stapler on his desk, and waited for the fish to decide if it was reliable today. It remained upside-down, motionless, and vaguely disappointed.

The brief

A grey coelacanth floats upside-down in a beige office cubicle, suspended beneath a flickering fluorescent light. Grey cubicle walls and beige carpet fill the background, while the fish casts a dull shadow on a stack of manila folders.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
