The story

The cacique was supposed to summon the rains at noon. He waited for the signal, but the signal never arrived. He decided to try anyway, shaking the lizard over the cup while chanting a prayer he half-remembered. Nothing happened. He tried again, switching hands, but the clouds remained absent. He sighed, placed the lizard on the throne beside him, and drank the water. He was intermittently reliable, and today was simply not one of the reliable days.

The brief

A cacique sits on a wooden throne in a dim room, wearing a gold headdress and a beige tunic. He holds a clay cup in one hand and a dead lizard in the other. The walls are ochre, and a single shaft of pale light illuminates dust motes above his head.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
