The story

The ant had promised to deliver a crumb of sugar to the nest by noon. It arrived at the designated speck of dust at 11:58, paused, and decided the crumb looked better where it was. It waited. At 12:03, it reconsidered and picked it up. At 12:07, it dropped it again, convinced the speck was a better landmark. By 12:15, it had moved the crumb three times, each time returning to the exact same spot. The nest never received the sugar. The ant, meanwhile, remained perfectly still, waiting for the right moment to try again.

The brief

A single black ant stands motionless on a speck of dust in the center of an otherwise empty white room, its antennae slightly raised as if listening, under flat, even light that casts no shadow, the walls and floor a uniform off-white with no texture or detail.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
